Crochet Flower Pad

Here is a cute flower pad for your kitchen, bath, or any room in the house. The flower is made with 6 crochet hexagons joined together. These work up very quickly and are a great way to use up leftover yarn.

Construction of the Pad

This kitchen flower pad is constructed first by making a crochet hexagon. We’ll be making a more closed motif, since we don’t want too many holes in this pattern. Then we’ll make 5 more for a total of 6 hexagons.

After making the hexagons, we’ll use a single crochet stitch along just 2 sides of each hexagon near the top. We’ll connect them in the corners with the single crochet edging. Then we’ll take a double strand of yarn and weave it in the center section to tie, knot, and secure it.

Stitches and Yarn for the Flower Pad

For the stitches, this pattern uses mainly the chain, double crochet, and single crochet stitch. Once you get the hang of the pattern, you’ll find it’s pretty easy to make. If you need any assistance with crochet, my beginner crochet videos can be very helpful!

I’m using 100% worsted weight cotton yarn for this pattern. I like the Sugar n Cream brand yarn because it is readily available and has worked great for me for many years. I like to use these as decorations around my kitchen.

You can use these as a trivet, or pot holder, or hot pad with CAUTION. It’s important to be careful and do not expose the finished item to high heat. Also please use caution since it’s not a 100% solid design. There are little holes in the chain-2 spaces.

If you’ve seen my work, you know I love color, and lots of it. You can make this flower pad in one color, or two colors. Or you could do what I did and use 4 colors. Technically you can use a fifth color for the outside edging as well. It’s a wonderful pattern to use up all that leftover scrap yarn.

One Final Note for the Flower Pad

Within the middle of each of the flower petals, there is a hairline gap. Personally it doesn’t bother me. I use mine more for decorative purposes or just to put something like a pan on it so I don’t scratch my counter top. However if you wish, feel free to use some yarn and needle and just whip stitch the centers closed a bit.

I do like the press the flower petals a bit with a medium iron. You don’t need to do this step, but since it’s cotton and can withstand the heat, I like to make it look a bit more crisp. At least for the photos, anyway!
